The Magubevu clan (often referred to by the prominent surnames Maduna or Gubevu) is a respected Nguni lineage predominantly found today among the isiXhosa-speaking AmaMfengu communities in the Eastern Cape, as well as across parts of KwaZulu-Natal - (See University of Botswana Journals) Historical Origins and Migrations: The Magubevu clan shares ancestral roots with the broader AbaMbo / Nguni people of South Africa. The Mfecane Displacement: Like many other AmaMfengu subgroups (such as the AmaBhele and AmaZizi), the Magubevu originally inhabited areas in parts of modern-day KwaZulu-Natal. During the turbulent Mfecane wars of the early 19th century, triggered by regional conflicts and expansion, they migrated southwards. (See Blogger.com.) Integration into the Eastern Cape: Fleeing these wars, they sought refuge in the Eastern Cape among the Xhosa kingdoms. Over time, they adopted the Xhosa language while strictly preserving their distinct identity, royal lineage, and customary practices. (See Uvelaphi.africa) The Zimbabwe Migration (Mbembesi): In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a section of the Amagubevu clan, along with other Xhosa/Mfengu clans, migrated further north to Zimbabwe. They established communities in the Mbembesi region, where the Magubevu (referred to historically as the amaDuna section) remain a foundational population in villages like Engxingweni.
